In the Championship, eleven regional representatives(*) including nine regional college football league champions and the winner of Prime Minister Cup are qualified for the championship..

If two teams are level at the end of regulation time, extra time shall be played.
If the match is still undecided, the winning team (in the final, the winner) shall be decided in a penalty shoot-out.

In the Prime Minister Cup, sixteen regional representatives(*) are qualified for the tournament.
*) One college team is selected to represent each of the nine regional college football tournaments. Four extra teams are selected to represent the Kanto colleges league. Two extra teams are selected to represent the Kansai colleges league. One extra team is selected to represent the Tokai or Kyushu colleges league.

If the match is still undecided, the winning team shall be decided in a penalty shoot-out. In the final, both of finalists are declared joint winners.
