The first Japan Ladies Soccer League opened on 9th September 1989.
The opening matche was Suzuyo Shimizu v. Yomiuri Beleza at Nishigaoka stadium in Tokyo. The first goal was scored by TAKAKURA Asako (Yomiuri).
In JLSL, regulation time is 80 minutes.
All teams play each other two times (some teams have no home stadiums).
In the League, teams are allotted two points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss.
The ranking is determined as follows: 1) total of all points, 2) goal difference, 3) total of goals.

Suzuyo Shimizu FC Lovely Ladies changes the team name from Shimizu FC which was sponsored by Suzuyo Co. and enticed the main players away from Shimizu Dai-hachi sports club.
Tasaki Shinju Kobe FC Ladies changes the team name from Kobe FC Ladies which was sponsored by Tasaki Shinju Co. ('Shinju' is a Japanese word of pearl.)
Prima Ham FC Kunoichi changes the team name from Iga-ueno FC Kunoichi which was sponsored by Prima Ham Co. in 1988.
JLSL did not make a clear distinction between home and away team.
Green-coloured matches are in the first half of the season and yellow-coloured matches are in the second half of the season.
