Eleven regional representatives(*) and the top five teams in the All Japan Club Youth (Under-18) Football Tournament are qualified for the championship.
*) One high school team is selected to represent each of the nine regionals. Each one extra teams are selected to represent regions including winner of last year's championship and All Japan High School Tournament.

In the tournament, when regulation time of the match play fails to determine a winner, the winning team is decided in a penalty shoot-out.
In the final, if the teams are level at the end of regulation time, 20 minutes (two 10-minute halves) of 'V-goal'(golden-goal) extra time shall be played. If neither team scores in extra time, the teams shall be declared joint winners.

Kunimi High school as the winner of Prince Takamado Cup shall be eligible to play in the 81st Emperor's Cup.
