The top two teams, Antlers and Grampus shall be eligible to play in J.League Champion Final 1996 (SUNTORY Cup).

In J.League, all teams play each other two times (each at home and away).
When regulation time of league match play fails to determine a winner, teams play a 'V-goal'(golden-goal) extra time. If the match is still undecided, the winning team is decided in a penalty shoot-out.
Teams are allotted three points for a win including an extra time win and a penalty shoot-out win, one point for a shoot-out extra time loss, and no points for a loss except shoot-out extra time loss.
The ranking is determined as follows: 1) total of all points, 2) goal difference, 3) total of goals.

One football club, Consadole (ex-Toshiba), become an associate club of J.League.

J.League shall add one team to the league in next season.
The top two teams(*) of Japan Football League, Vissel, is promoted to J.League.
*) HONDA, Japan Football League champion, was an unqualified team for the J.League. In 1996, promoted team is only one.

In Preliminary Rounds, all teams play each other one round. In each round, teams play two legs each at home and away.
Teams are allotted three points for a win of round, one point for a draw of round, and no points for a loss of round.
The ranking is determined as follows: 1) total of all points, 2) goal difference, 3) total of goals.

  • 3: each Win of rounds, more goals at the end of 2nd-leg
  • 1: each Draw of rounds, level at the end of 2nd-leg
  • 0: each Loss of rounds, less goals at the end of 2nd-leg

The top two teams in each group progress to Semi-finals.

In the final, if two teams are level at the end of regulation time, 30 minutes of extra time (not golden-goal) shall be played. If the match is still undecided, the winner shall be decided in a penalty shoot-out.

The top two teams, S-Pulse and Verdy shall be eligible to play in J.League Champion Final 1996 (SUNTORY Cup).
